‘Twisted Cage’ is dark and forbidden and I never expected to like this book (or these characters) so much! 

Maybe it’s me, but ‘Twisted Cage’ felt like such a quick read. It’s not that I was skimming through the book quickly because I was bored. How could I be bored when there was either enemies to fight or hot and steamy scenes between Nikoletta Romanoff and her ‘godfather’ and her real father’s friend Konstantin ‘Kostya’ Malikov, sometimes one extreme followed the other.

I really did like Nikoletta. She is a definite mix of vulnerable and brave. She is also a mafia princess that is struggling to live up to the outrageous expectations from her family. Forced to marry someone she barely knows, Nikoletta decides to sell her virginity to the highest bidder, at a strip club. Dumbest. Plan. Ever! It’s all ruined when her godfather Kostya saves her from her ridiculous plan. This is where the story takes a deliciously forbidden turn. There is also sooo many misunderstandings between Nikoletta and Kostya. I must admit, there were moments when these two drove me crazy! It’s worth getting through the fights, though, to experience their fiery chemistry. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series, because that ending left me wanting so much more.

By the way, the forbidden aspect to this book centers around more than Kostya being Nikoletta’s godfather/father’s friend. There is also a 30 year age gap that separates them. While she is 18/19 years old, Kostya is 48/49.

Discreet Cover

There were some issues that I had while reading ‘Heartless Monster’ that truly disgusted me. The main one was how far Rome Cromwell was willing to go to bend his step-sister, Elodie Astor, to his will. While I understand bully romances can cross lines that are at times dark, when the guy tries to break a girl’s fingers to control her, that is abusive. After that scene, I wanted to stop reading this book all together. I did finish this story, though, because I wanted to give this new-to-me author a chance. Rachel Leigh’s writing style kept me interested, but that one scene between Rome and Elodie ruined the whole story for me. So my synopsis of these characters are;  Rome is an abusive jerk and Elodie is too sweet and trusting for her own good (and safety and sanity, too.) I might try another book from this author, because, like I mentioned before, Ms. Leigh definitely can write an interesting story. As for the title, I think Rome Cromwell is a ‘heartless monster’, so it’s a perfect fit.

My heart broke completely for Lex Gorgon. Her life has been completely changed after the horrendous actions done to her by a person who she trusted. I understood her anger, her need for revenge at all cost. But the moment she meets her target, Luna Pallas, the popular, sunny girl of Acheron University, there was no stopping Lex’s intense attraction for her. 

I loved how Luna’s sweet, sunshine personality softened Lex’s intense darkness. There is something so beautiful in the way Luna stood by Lex, (and Lex for Luna) even from a distance when she knew Lex needed her space. It was easy for me to see that these two were destined to know each other.

While ‘Serpentine Valentine’ tackles some very heavy issues, I think Giana Darling covered Lex’s attack as delicately as possible. It is still difficult to read this part of the story, though.

I liked the premise of this story from the start. Scarlett Lancaster’s wealthy parents create the ultimate 18th birthday party filled with everything a girl could wish for: a large venue, 18 birthday cakes, her crush Ian Baldwin in attendance and former lead singer from ‘Five Car Pileup’, Tate Ramsey, singing just for her. Sounds perfect right? Ummm…

Scarlett use to idolize Tate Ramsey until he wrecked his career. Now she is embarrassed he is even at her party. This part of the story bothered me. Am I weird that this made me feel bad for Tate? I just couldn’t relate to Scarlett’s childish attitude regarding Tate’s infamy. I like Scarlett, but her judgement is a little crazy. I mean, the girl is in love with a guy who doesn’t even notice her most of the time. Don’t get me started on Ian Baldwin or I will just rant for paragraphs about him. Uh! 

There was something so heartbreaking about Tate Ramsey’s struggle to stay afloat after the break up of his band. His career is reduced to recording personalized videos for fans just to make ends meet. So being paid to perform at Scarlett’s birthday party is really the break through he needed. Well until the picture of Tate kissing Scarlett leaks to social media. This is the part of the story that left me struggling to finish this book. Everything that leads to Scarlett and Tate’s fake relationship was so icky. Then afterwards, I dreaded every long, drawn-out page until I got to the semi perfect HEA. 

I think ‘Lonely For You Only’ would have made a perfect novella, instead it was a full length story that lacked a true connection between Scarlett and Tate.
